An Act to amend the Animals Act 1975 to control the keeping of rabbits.

BE IT ENACTED by the Parliament of the Cook Islands in Session assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
This Act may be cited as the Animals Amendment Act 1981, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Animals Act 1975 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).
The principal Act is hereby amended by inserting in Part IV, before section 36, the following section:
"35A. Rabbit-keeping
(1) No person shall keep any rabbit in the Cook Islands otherwise than under the following conditions:
- (a) Every such rabbit shall at all times be securely housed or restrained to the satisfaction of an Inspector in such a manner as will prevent its escape; and
- (b) A rabbit shall not be kept in such a manner as will allow it to range freely or to graze pasture.
(2) Nothing in section 7 (1) (k) of this Act shall apply with respect to rabbits of any breed specified by the Minister by notice in the Cook Islands Gazette.
(3) Every person commits an offence who acts in contravention of or fails to comply with any provision of this section, and is liable to a fine not exceeding $200, and, where the offence is a continuing one, to a further fine not exceeding $25 for every day on which the offence has continued."
